I have been reading up on Home Rule Charters. I think it would be an interesting thing for us to look into. It would be opposed by a number of groups that have a direct interest in keeping Borough Government out of the hands of the people and more of a closed community that only care about their actions once every 4 years.
It would take a petition that contains signatures of registered voters that total 5% of the last Gubernatorial election. I can't imagine that the 2006 election garnered more that 5000 voters in the Borough. That would mean 250 signatures would be required. Required for what????? Required to elect a governmental commission to study the question. That is all, just to study the question. Then after a draft charter is created, then it can go to the voters to decide if Home Rule is the way to go.
I want the voters to have the ability to place referendum on the ballots for issues that are important. That is currently unavailable to us.
