A sign of the bad economy

Posted by Mr. Ellsworth Toohey

I put my garbage out yesterday afternoon. An hour after putting it out, I caught someone going through my trash can. I went out to take another bag to the curb around 11 pm and a guy is pulling cans out of my recycling can. I leave for work this morning and a woman is pulling a broken coffee maker out of the trash bag I brought to the curb last night. Bad economy or a growing conservation movement?

I've frequently seen a man and a woman collecting cans from recycling bins in the Borough before trash pickup. I believe they turn them in for cash at the Phoenixville scrap yard.
I've run into them in my area at least for the last two years. Hey, why not? The can money may be feeding their family.

I read this post earlier, and it has haunted me.

Some people choose to do the dumpster diving routine as a sport, but others do it out of a real need.

It disturbs me that some of our residents may be enduring hardships in silence.

I hope to God no one is doing this looking for food.

And if the person/persons doing this deed are reading this blob -

Just remember that there is a Borough Ordinance against trash picking. Don't get caught!

If "The Borough" catches someone trash picking in these difficult times would it really prosecute them? That is cold!

Just remember that the Borough gets a little income from the recycling. Loss of this income could cause your taxes to increase more that what they do without it.
