#3 -- Meet the new boss, same as the old boss

Posted by Mr. Ellsworth Toohey

Not quite but if you asked me last January what the most significant story of this year would be, I would have said something related to the seating of 3 relative newcomers to Borough government. Mr. Handwerk had the most experience and knowledge but at just 12 years old, had some hurdles to jump in order to get some credibility. Mr. Speck had a lot of energy but seemed at time to be to much of a cheerleader and not enough a practical thinker. Mr. Senley came in as the dragon slayer and seemed like he was going need some time adjusting to the chaotic stupidity that has become Phoenixville Borough Council.

This was supposed to be "Change we could believe in" Phoenixville style. Not so much. Mr Wagner gets the coveted Council President chair and so leads the Borough for the next 11 months in leaderless wanderings through the revitalization wilderness. His first bold move was to pick Mr. Senley for Finance chair over the former chair Mr. Kirkner. Obviously trying to pin this and future budget messes on the R's, Mr. Wagner gives this chair to a rookie. Mr. Senley picks the ball up and runs with it, calling for early budget talks as soon as a Borough Manager is hired. He fought, along with Mr. Buckwalter and Mr. Kirkner, for a major reduction in the tax increase in this years budget. There finanaly seemed to be an opposition party back in Phoenixville.

Nothing really changed in Phoenixville. Messina and DiGirolomo were out but what was actually gained? Barry Cassidy was allowed to run wild with getting anything he wanted through Council including a new 5 year contract and a Parking Authority. The only person that Council was willing to stand up to and say NO was Barbara Cohen. They turned her down a few times.

What did I miss?
