2009 Budget

Posted by Mr. Ellsworth Toohey in

One of the things that is not really touched an among the blogs is what the readers think should be the budget priorities for the upcoming year. I think that we can assume a nice little tax increase is coming our way. I have no real problem with a tax increase if I can trust that the priorities of the Borough are in the right place. The past 2 years has shown us that there is a real lack of vision as it pertains to the capital improvements of the Borough and its infrastructure. Just look around and tell me the last time you saw the streets being repaved or anything being done in a Borough park.

The Borough taxes are a relatively small part of our tax bill for the year. It does not help the bank account when PASD jacks their rate up every year also. We can deal with that issue later.

What are you willing to give up for the same tax rate as last year or what are you willing to pay for increased services?

I'm willing to pay for:

-improvements to the water system

-setting up a "Adopt a Park" system so that resident groups can adopt local parks, set priorities for thos parks and then get help with grant writing to make improvements.

-increase in Drug Enforcement Police officers

-increase in Code Enforcement personnel

I'm not willing to pay for:

-the complete CDC contract (I'd be willing to pay 50% and have the CDC Board/local businesses pay the other 50%)

-a parking garage for the downtown businesses

Anyone else?
