I am not a big skateboarding fan but I have heard the story of Alex Kessler in the past.  Here is a pretty good op-ed piece written about him in the NY Times.

True, he was a pioneer. I never knew that he was the first to use multi-track recording and over dubbing. I thought he just invented the electric guitar.
