A Couple of Questions on this one

Posted by Mr. Ellsworth Toohey

Do we now consider his decisions and opinions on Council floor to be representative of the Representative he works for? He has had a short history of supporting projects that don't really have the support of his constituents (but supported by his friends). And when he goes on Council floor and blasts people that write blog postings and criticize thing that are wrong with the Borough, will he consider that it is bloggers like myself that stepped over party lines to support Paul Drucker? "Because you're mine, I walk the line."

Drucker taps Speck for Audubon office

PHOENIXVILLE — Rep. Paul Drucker (D-157) has named Phoenixville Borough Council member Mike Speck (D-East) to staff his constituent relations office in Audubon.

The move was formally announced Saturday at the opening of that office in the Audubon Village Shopping Center on Egypt Road.

“We want to be very aggressive in our constituent outreach in this portion of the District,” Drucker said, “and we’re delighted to have Mike helping us here.”

The admiration was mutual. “During Paul’s campaign,” Speck said, “I became aware of his commitment and dedication to outreach. I’m pleased that he accepted me for the position. [As a council member] I’ve worked with my own constituents in Phoenixville, but I’m new to this job, and I’m lucky to be able to work with a good team. We’ll be working closely together.”

That team includes Drucker’s chief of staff Maria Micolucci, Harrisburg legislative assistant Cynthia Clory, and Anne Marie Brazunas, constituent relations director at a second District office in Wayne, at The Woods office campus at Swedesford and Old Eagle School Roads. All staff were

present with Speck for the Audubon opening.

Speck’s introduction to his new responsibilities included an intensive three-day briefing in Harrisburg on constituent relations, organized by the House Democratic Caucus, Speck said.

But that session was after Speck announced his departure from a 23-year career working with troubled youth at St. Gabriel’s Hall. He has served in a variety of capacities there, as Communication Center coordinator, as residential manager for the pre-adolescent unit, and as a supervisor and acting director of the program for first-time offenders.

“That was definitely hard,” Speck said, “after so many years there working with troubled youth.”

Speck has been a resident of the Borough for nearly as long as his career at St. Gabriel’s. He was elected to his Council seat in 2007, was a member of the Youth Aid Panel, and is an active a member of the American Legion and Kiwanis.

He holds a B.A. in criminal justice and sociology from LaSalle University, and served with the Marine Corps for six years.

I admit I'm stunned on this one. Speck has very strong opinions and has been quite vigerous about telling constituants that they are wrong. Not quite the type I'd pick for "constituant service" with the R's breathing down my neck.

It will be interesting to see where Drucker goes. Good constituant service, which includes going to bat for constituants on legistlation in Harrisburg, could turn the tide, but I haven't seen any evidence that Drucker has guts. Speck has guts, but believes he's always right.

It's going to be very interesting.

What was Drucker thinking? Speck is a loose cannon novice and most of the time we can't figure where he's coming from. He hasn't represented this voter so it's doubtful he'll be elected again. Constituent outreach? What a joke.

I find Speck to have a very short attention span and routinely feels the need to preach, scold and treat his constituency like he must have done with his charges at St. Gabe's. Peter Priciple is right on. I find him worthless as far as his representing the people of his ward and their opinions. Makes me think a whole lot less of Drucker, for sure. And, by the way, I'm a registered Democrat. Sad to think this was his best choice.

Stop harping on Senley. At least he knows how to fill out an Ethics Statement correctly. The Council Prez has had trouble with that for a while.

Speck is a good man

I don't think that i questioned how good of a man he was but I did question how conflicted of a man he will be in that position.

Maybe he'll rise to the occasion. No one can speculate on how he'll do any better than a palm reader can read my hand.

On another note, why would anyone defend Senley (the argument is that at "least" he can fill out an ethics statement correctly)? What a horrible defense that one is. If I had to chose between someone who may not seemingly be qualified vs. someone who has attendance issues - well, I would chose the under qualified person any day. Showing up and putting in effort is 2/3 of the battle. So, I agree that Senley should be taken off council.
Speck at least puts in the effort.

Lay off the sauce, it is clouding the mind. First of all, if you don't fill out an Ethics statement correctly you are not deemed unqualified, you are deemed a criminal since you broke the law. As for removing Mr. Senley, show me where you are able to do that. Look good and hard because you won't find it. Recall vote . . . not there. Wagner remove him . . . .can't do it. Act of god . . . .maybe.

Well, I understand that Speck retired from his former postion, and that this position with Drucker is unpaid. Therefore, no conflict exists. He has to file ethic statements every year, and I am confident that if there is anything inapproporiate, it will be caught. But both are upstanding and ethical gentlemen. So, this seems to be much ado about nothing.
