Congressman Gerlach and the Audacity of Nope!

Steven Colbert thanks House Republicans for having the courage to oppose the Stimulus Package and calls for them to turn down any funds for their districts if the bill passes both houses. Will any of them have the courage to do that?

Courage? Not funny or profound, as with most of Colbert's nonsense. Turning down money would be insanity, not courageous. The "stimulous" bill is full of pork and non stimulating provisions equaling at minimum, tens of billions of dollars. And if it passes, turning down money because you were opposed to ACORN getting billions, for example, is just stupid. Colbert needs new writers.

Point out for us the "pork" that the bill is filled with. Rep. LoBiando (R-NJ) came up with this list.

$1.9 billion for high-level physics research;

$1.5 billion for universities to improve their biomedical research programs;

$600 million for the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to purchase new satellites to improve weather forecasts;

$600 million to buy new cars for federal government workers, adding to the existing inventory of 640,000 vehicles; and,

$335 million for education and prevention programs regarding sexually transmitted diseases.

Separate criticism has been directed at $75 million for smoking cessation plan.

I will tell you that the health aspects are really to help states with their health crisis. Cars will help Detroit out instead of just handing them more money without getting anything. We need more research money. Is that all there is to complain about? What about extended SCHIP money, Unemployement money, infrastructure money? Complaints about that?

Lets get real. We need to spend federal money like there is no tomorrow in order to pull us out of this tailspin. Do we hear my fellow Republicans complaining about spending billions to rebuild Iraq? (by the way the CBO just called their efforts a complete failure. More on that later)
